Busy Bee

St. Thomas, USVI – Day 16

When the rains come, they come. Occasionally there will be light drizzle, but usually the sun is out and it’s refreshing. But when it rains, boy does it rain.

As I mentioned yesterday I found a good Wi-Fi spot out in the middle of a field. I wandered out there after we were done today and found a fiberglass container that was upside down, sat on that and Skyped The Cheese Puff. It started to drizzle, than rain a little more so I knocked the container on its side and sat inside it. Then the rains came. But I remained dry. After a bit there was some lighting so I tried calling Flower and The Peanut, but it wasn’t working anymore so I walked back to the tent. In the torrential rain. Needless to say when I got back I was a tad wet.

It seemed like it would be a low key night. A few guys were playing cards. I was about to sit down to write this post when another guy came in and said that one of the tents across the way was flooded. By then the rain had stopped, but it had come down so fast there were huge puddles everywhere. We spent about an hour digging trenches and pumping out the water, so at least the standing water is gone, but the Army guys across the way are going to have some cleanup to do.

I had a lot of stick time today. In the skid steer I was cleaning and stockpiling some stone that had been dumped in the wrong place, and then laying out a pad for the kitchen trailer that showed up today. Hopefully in a day or two we’ll be getting hot meals. I also got the opportunity to get in a grader for the first time since tech school. I had to grade out a parking area. I did not do too badly. They are terribly complicated machines and take a long time to even be okay at. It wasn’t the most level area ever, but it’ll get the job done.

Overall there wasn’t a whole lot to do so I was glad that I kept pretty busy all day. Even when everyone else is sitting around not doing much it still feels awkward especially because I’m the “new guy.” So it felt good to always be doing something all day.

Some of the power pro guys (the ones who deal with generators) went up to some other buildings to work on some generators there. It seems like we might start to get some more projects in the area to keep us busy. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to venture out and do some other work.
